Fifty-Four Percent of Valentine's Day Shoppers Will Spend $100 or More, According to Survey From Brad's Deals

Dinner and Lunch Dates Rank as 2015's Most Popular Valentine's Gift

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwired - February 04, 2015) - Fifty-four percent of shoppers plan to spend $100 or more this Valentine's Day, and the most popular gift isn't a gift at all -- it's a meal, either a lunch or dinner date. That's according to a survey from Brad's Deals, the experts who post the best deals from across the web every day.

"Valentine's Day shopping isn't as open and shut as it once was," says Brad Wilson, CEO of Brad's Deals. "The old standbys of roses and chocolate are still popular, but we're finding that some people would rather receive a homemade gift or a dine-out meal."

This year's most desired gifts are, in order, a dine-out meal (44 percent), jewelry (31 percent), flowers (29 percent), chocolate, candy, or something edible (19 percent), apparel (12 percent), and a homemade gift (7 percent). Dine-out meals were also ranked first for what shoppers plan to give, as 59% said they'll be buying lunch or dinner for their valentine.

Shoppers were asked if it's bad form to use coupons on a first date. Thirty-seven percent agreed that using a coupon on a first date is cheap, while 46 percent said first date couponing is fair game. Play ball, couponers!

Valentine's Day ranks as the second most popular proposal day of the year, just behind Christmas Eve. When asked about V-Day proposals, 18 percent of respondents considered them tacky, while 50 percent think they're sweet.

If you're looking to find a Valentine's Day date via a dating app or website, you may want to think again. Fifty-six percent of respondents said they wouldn't go on a first date on Valentine's Day with a person they met online.
