Fig Tree Foundation: Calgary Microcredit Conference Brings World-Class Lineup to Calgary

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Sept. 15, 2011) - The Calgary Microcredit Conference announced today a world-class line-up of speakers for the Calgary Microcredit Conference on October 1, 2011. Leaders at the forefront of the worldwide microcredit movement including Alex Counts, President and CEO of Grameen Foundation and author of Small Loans, Big Dreams: How Nobel Prize Winner Muhammad Yunus and Microfinance Are Changing the World; Rupert Scofield, President & CEO FINCA International and author of The Social Entrepreneur's Handbook; and Terry Provance, President & CEO of Oikocredit USA, are set to share their experience, knowledge and insights. This year's theme "Beyond Microcredit – The Emerging Wave of Social Business and Social Entrepreneurship," will move the discussion beyond credit and finance, into the realm of businesses with a social objective.

"Calgary is renowned for its entrepreneurial as well as its philanthropic spirit," says conference Chair Steve Rickard. "… the conference provides an opportunity for these two to be united, as well as a mechanism for learning how individuals and businesses can become engaged in addressing some of the world's most pressing issues."

"Microcredit has been growing for over 30 years since founding father Muhammad Yunus gave out his first loan. At the same time the concept of a social business, which simply put is a non-loss, non-dividend business designed to meet a social objective, has been gaining traction amongst development organizations, governments, and especially businesses," adds Rickard. "We are pleased to have such a high caliber line-up of speakers that can speak both on where microcredit has been, as well as where it is headed."

The one-day conference, will be held on Saturday October 1, 2011 at the Danish Canadian Club. Tickets are $90 and can be purchased online through EventBrite. More information on the conference can be found at
