Fire Brigade Union Urges NO Vote in Alternative Vote Referendum

LONDON, ENGLAND--(Marketwire - May 3, 2011) - The Fire Brigades Union has joined a number of other trade unions in urging a No vote in the Alternative Vote referendum on 5 May. The union says AV will not deliver better democratic control over Members of Parliament and is a "wasteful diversion" from the Government attacks on public services and living standards.

FBU General Secretary Matt Wrack said:

"While we are happy to consider genuine options for improving the democracy of the voting system, the AV proposal simply does not deliver. AV will not improve accountability or increase democratic control over elected politicians. At the current time this referendum is also a wasteful diversion from the fact that this government has embarked on wrecking our public services and destroying the living standards of millions of people."
