FIRE CUTS: Norfolk Firefighters Lobby Against Dangerous Cuts to Frontline 999 Services

NORWICH, ENGLAND--(Marketwire - Oct. 10, 2010) - Firefighters from across Norfolk will be joined today by Matt Wrack, FBU General Secretary, at their lobby outside County Hall on Monday 11th October to protest against controversial and dangerous cuts in the Norfolk fire & rescue service. The Lobby will be held at County Hall, Martineau Lane, Norwich, NR1 2DH, at 8.45 a.m. on Monday 11th October 2010.

The lobby is timed to coincide with a Cabinet Meeting that is expected to rubber stamp the £1.5M cuts plans already approved by the Council's Fire and Protection Overview and Scrutiny Panel (FPOSP). The proposals include;

  • Reduction of fire cover to Yarmouth and Norwich areas
  • Reductions in frontline fire service resources in rural areas
  • Fewer frontline firefighters spread even more thinly across Norfolk

Although the FPOSP modified their original proposals following the public consultation period, they ignored the overall public response. Over 80% of respondents did not support cuts to their Fire & Rescue Service.

These results are consistent with a recent national YouGov poll which shows the public broadly agree:

• 85% of people asked oppose government plans to cut funding in the Fire & Rescue Service;

• 95% of those asked thought that despite the economic crisis, we need to keep at least the same number, or employ more firefighters;

• 95% agreed that a rapid response to fires should be a high priority.
