On Saturday, May 10, 2008, Canadians can help cook up a cure! Visit any of the more than 465 M&M Meat Shops locations across Canada to support the 20th Annual M&M Meat Shops Charity BBQ Day benefiting Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada (CCFC) medical research.

M&M Meat Shops' franchisees, staff and thousands of volunteers from coast-to-coast will be grilling hamburgers and hot dogs to meet the 20th Anniversary Charity BBQ Day fundraising goal of $2 million. On May 10th, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., supporters will receive a hamburger or hot dog, a drink and a bag of chips for a minimum donation of $2.50. All product and time is donated, so every penny raised goes directly to CCFC for its research programs.

Breaking Records for a Cure

From humble beginnings, the M&M Meat Shops Charity BBQ Day has grown into CCFC's largest annual fundraising activity by any single supporter. Over the past 20 years, M&M Meat Shops has raised more than $14.5 million for medical research dedicated to finding a cure for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, two similar yet distinct conditions also known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Canada has the highest incidence of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis in the world, yet the public profile of these "taboo" diseases continues to be low. There are nearly 200,000 Canadians suffering from IBD. It is a painful and unpredictable disorder, there is no known cause or cure and the number of cases continues to grow. The funds raised through events such as Charity BBQ Day have allowed CCFC to fund nearly $50 million in medical research projects and have helped it become one of the world's leading sources of non-governmental, per capita funding of IBD research.

Charity BBQ Day began in 1988, when Mac Voisin, Founder of M&M Meat Shops learned that Canadians suffer from IBD at an unusually high rate. He quickly realized that he had the unique opportunity to help raise awareness and funds for a little known, and even less spoken about condition and Canadian charity. Charity BBQ Day was born and the CCFC gained both a corporate sponsor and a public voice. Over the past 20 years, Charity BBQ Day has grown rapidly. Last year, $1.91 million was raised and this year the goal is set at $2 million.

$2.50 Hamburgers Help Find a Cure

Much of the money raised through Charity BBQ Day is used to help fund the CCFC IBD Research Institute, which reviews promising studies on all aspects of the disease and chooses the best project in which to invest. With this support, CCFC has:

- Sustained and grown IBD research conducted by Canada's most talented researchers. This funding has helped junior scientists secure additional funding from other sources; enticed foreign scientists to work with Canadian teams and helped senior research leaders attract talented researchers to join their teams.

- Launched an effort that estimated the incidence and prevalence of IBD in Canada and outlined the real "burden" of this disease on patients, their families and Canadian health care.

- Jointly funded collaborations involving researchers and research centres working to find the cure for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. These collaborations have reinforced the team spirit embodied in Canada's IBD research community and facilitated world-wide recognition.

- Embarked on fundraising a landmark, cross-national project looking at the Genetic, Environmental and Microbial Factors contributing to the onset of Crohn's disease.
