FiReGlobal Speaker Poised to Help Utahans Take Back Their Night Skies

PARK CITY, UT--(Marketwire - November 9, 2010) -  FiReGlobal : West Coast is pleased to announce that speaker Pete Strasser, Technical Director of the International Dark-Sky Association, will also be speaking in Park City, Utah on November 15th, 2010 at the Park City Library. Strasser will share his experience fighting light pollution around the world and provide audience members with ideas and inspiration for reclaiming their own night skies. The conversation will be sponsored by Wasatch Back Environmental Alliance, the Park City Chamber/Bureau and the Park City Municipal Corporation.

The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) is the recognized authority on light pollution. Founded in 1988, IDA is the first organization to call attention to the hazards of light pollution, and has made tremendous accomplishments in the past 22 years of operation. IDA promotes one simple idea: light what you need, when you need it. The IDA knows some light at night is necessary for safety and recreation, and it works with manufacturers, planners, legislators, and citizens to provide energy efficient options that direct light where it is needed, not uselessly up into the sky.

"Inferior design, for both installations and luminaires, and the myth that 'more light means more safe,' has led to the declining state of the nocturnal habitat and disappearance of the celestial panorama. Good design saves energy, saves money, and saves the night time sky. It's fiscally and morally irresponsible to do otherwise," said Pete Strasser, Technical Director of the International Dark-Sky Association.

FiReGlobal : West Coast will showcase a world-class gathering of local and global thought leaders in technology and economics through a series of interviews and onstage conversations. The conference will take place November 11th at the Seattle Fairmont Olympic Hotel. This is the second annual regional version of the renowned Future in Review™ technology conference, which the Economist calls "the best technology conference in the world." FiReGlobal : West Coast has overlaid regional problems nominated by local leaders, to be solved through the collaboration of local Chief Technology Officers prior to the conference.

"Pete's approach to pollution is smart, easy, cost-effective, low impact, and it provides an improvement that's hard to value: the return of urban starscapes," said Mark Anderson, CEO of SNS, Chair of FiRe and FiReGlobal : West Coast.
