First Book and Kiddie Academy Announce Partnership to Deliver Books to Children in Need

Grassroots Initiatives Highlight Kiddie Academy Community Involvement

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - March 8, 2010) -  Today First Book announces that Kiddie Academy, a leader in education-based childcare, is extending its commitment to advancing educational opportunities for all children by partnering with First Book, the nonprofit providing books to children in need. The two will join forces to bring thousands more books to underserved children across the nation and in local communities where Kiddie Academy centers are located.

The union already created local community impact in December when the partnership launched with staff from Kiddie Academy's corporate headquarters volunteering to help distribute 10,000 books to programs serving children in need in the Baltimore area and around the country. Beginning in February, Kiddie Academy will launch grassroots initiatives, such as online book drives and a book-a-thon, where participating Kiddie Academies will have the opportunity to support First Book at the local level.

"There is a fantastic synergy between Kiddie Academy and First Book, so our partnership makes perfect sense. Our focus on education and commitment to local communities is the core of everything we do. It's an honor to be able to work with an organization such as First Book that cares about children's literacy," said Mike Miller, president of Kiddie Academy. "We know that books are fundamental in a child's development, and having a brand new book can have such an impact on their attitude toward reading. We're thrilled at the possibility of these books inspiring healthy reading habits in children."

"Kiddie Academy shares our commitment to ensuring that all children grow up with enriched learning opportunities and an abundance of books in their homes and classrooms," said Kyle Zimmer, president and CEO, First Book. "The enthusiasm of the franchisees and their commitment to helping their local communities will help bring thousands of books to children who need them most."

Statistics on access to books highlight the need to dramatically increase the availability of books in low-income neighborhoods. According to Susan B. Neuman in the Handbook of Early Literacy Research, there is an average of 13 books for every child in middle income neighborhoods but only one book for every 300 children in low-income neighborhoods. First Book addresses this deficit by providing wonderful new books to schools and programs serving children in need.
