First Canada-China Science Management Forum on Agriculture and Agri-Food

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 12, 2005) - Canada is hosting the 2005 Canada-China Science Management Forum, October 11 and 12. As the first such forum ever held, the event marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Canada and the People's Republic of China.

Close to 100 agriculture and agri-food managers, scientists and university representatives are gathered to exchange views on research, establish priorities for cooperation between the two countries, and lay the groundwork for the development in the coming years of science partnerships in the areas of livestock production, food processing, biotechnology and the environment.

During the Forum, an agreement will also be signed with the State Administration for Foreign Expert Affairs (SAFAE) to promote cooperation and exchanges involving research scientists and graduate students working in areas of research that are priorities for both countries.

In Canada, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and universities are responsible for 83 percent of research and development activities in the agricultural sector. The 600 Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada scientists working in 19 research centres throughout the country account for almost half of the research activities.
