First Four Teams Qualify for CIS FINAL 8 Men's Basketball Championship, Presented by Milk

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 4, 2008) - In conjunction with Canadian Interuniversity Sport and Scotiabank Place, the host organizing committee for the 2008 CIS men's basketball championship - the FINAL 8, presented by Milk, today announced the first four teams to qualify for this year's tournament.

The five-time defending champion Carleton University Ravens, who had already secured a berth as tournament host, will enter as either Ontario University Athletics (OUA) champions or as OUA finalists (by virtue of Saturday's 75-56 win over the University of Ottawa in the OUA East final). The Ravens will meet the OUA West champion University of Western Ontario Mustangs this Saturday in a battle for OUA supremacy. Western Ontario also captured one of the three OUA berths with a convincing 79-62 road win over the Brock University Badgers on Saturday in St. Catharines, Ont.

The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds and University of Alberta Golden Bears will represent the Canada West conference. UBC captured the Canada West crown with a thrilling 92-90 win over Alberta on Saturday evening in the gold-medal final of the conference Final Four in Calgary. The Golden Bears gain CIS FINAL 8 entry as Canada West finalist.

Still to be decided are entries from Atlantic University Sport (AUS), the Quebec Student Sports Federation (QSSF), a third OUA entry and a wildcard participant. The Concordia Stingers visit the Laval Rouge et Or Friday at 7 p.m. in the QSSF final, the Ottawa Gee-Gees travel to St. Catherines to face Brock in the OUA bronze-medal match Saturday at 2 p.m., and the AUS FINAL 6 gets under way Friday at the Halifax Metro Centre and concludes with the title match Sunday at 2 p.m. (Atlantic Time).

The CIS FINAL 8 brackets including first-round match-ups will be released Sunday, March 9.

All individual game tickets will be sold as part of two-game sessions, which commence with quarterfinal games on Friday, March 14, at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. With games scheduled for 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., the Friday evening session will feature the five-time defending national champion Carleton University Ravens playing their first game of the tournament in the nightcap.

Single session tickets, which includes entry to both of the session's games start at $10 per ticket. Full tournament packages (which includes a ticket to each of the 10 tournament games) are available starting at $60 per package.
