First Marblehead Names Greg D. Johnson Chief Marketing Officer

BOSTON, MA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- January 16, 2007 -- The First Marblehead Corporation (NYSE: FMD) today announced that Greg D. Johnson has joined the Company as Executive Vice President, Chief Marketing Officer, effective today. He will report to Jack Kopnisky, the company's Chief Executive Officer.

Johnson will be responsible for leading all marketing strategy and delivery for First Marblehead. He will direct an expanding in-house marketing function that works in collaboration with lender and loan marketer clients, third-party agencies and vendors to support the development, execution and analysis of direct response marketing programs.

Johnson joins First Marblehead with more than 20 years experience in integrated multi-channel business and marketing initiatives, most recently as executive vice president, Arnold Worldwide, where he was director of Arnold One. At Arnold, he oversaw all integrated marketing activities in the agency's Boston, New York and Washington offices and directed the creation and delivery of integrated marketing on the agency's top accounts including Fidelity Investments, Vonage, ESPN and Royal Caribbean International.

Prior to Arnold Worldwide, Johnson was the founder and principal of management consulting firm Epoch Strategy and a principal at DiaLogos. He also spent several years in leadership positions with what is now Digitas. He began his career in research and analytics with Epsilon and The Gillette Company. Johnson holds a Bachelor's Degree in economics and communications from Babson College.

The Company also announced that Larry A. Lutz, who previously held the position of Chief Marketing Officer, has moved into the newly created position of Executive Vice President, Strategic Alliances, continuing to report to Kopnisky. Lutz will be responsible for identifying and developing strategic business partnerships for First Marblehead as well as directing the company's industry and government relations programs.
