First Netherlands E-Scrap Recycler Receives WEEELABEX Certification

WEEELABEX Sets Standards and Monitoring Requirements for Processing WEEE

LONG MARSTON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwired - November 11, 2014) - Sims Recycling Solutions becomes the first Netherlands organisation to receive the WEEELABEX certificate for the responsible processing of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).

The certificate was presented to Sims at its facility in the Netherlands on October 7, 2014 by Remco Dijkstra, a Dutch Member of Parliament for the Dutch Liberal Party.

"We are proud to be the first Dutch organisation to receive this designation," said Rene Kik, Commercial Director of Europe at Sims Recycling Solutions. "The certification embodies practices we already adhere to at our centre and we are glad to see the Netherlands is taking a proactive stance on the responsible processing of WEEE."

WEEELABEX is a landmark European certification that sets standards and closely monitors the processing and disposal of WEEE. It also audits outlets for secondary raw materials at the end of the process and has a strong focus on health and safety. Sims internal protocols aligned with the WEEELABEX model to earn the first certification in the Netherlands.

The WEEELABEX certification is part of a project by the environmental programme of the European Community that has not yet been adopted in all nations. The Dutch government is an early adopter and will require all e-waste recyclers to become certified to continue receiving e-waste after mid-2015.

The Netherlands electronics recycling centre processes around 65,000 tonnes of e-waste each year and has special facilities for processing LCD monitors, TVs and toner cartridges from copiers and printers.
