Transient Blocking Unit From Fultec Creates Circuit Protection Paradigm Shift

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwire - June 6, 2007) - Over-voltage and over-current surge events can destroy electronic equipment, cause fire or, in extreme cases, create life threatening situations. Yet as our electronic systems become smaller, more sensitive and run at higher frequencies, design engineers have been limited to solving their circuit protection problems with the same set of components introduced decades ago -- fuses, thyristors, PTCs, diodes, and gas discharge tubes. These existing circuit protection solutions, which are limited in protection level and can reduce the data-rate capacity of the electronic system, are often complex, multi-component, and multi-technology schemes.

Now, for the first time in over a decade, a new type of device is available to the circuit designer -- the Transient Blocking Unit (TBU), designed specifically to meet the needs of today's sensitive electronics.

Fultec Semiconductor has developed the TBU device to protect communication system interfaces with the first semiconductor protection device that blocks surges from entering sensitive electronic equipment, rather than shunting the surges to ground. The TBU device protects an interface by using the energy from the surge to nearly instantaneously disconnect the interface from the incoming surge. The extremely high speed performance of the TBU device limits let-thru energy to micro-joule levels by reacting to very high voltages & currents in nanoseconds. When the danger from the surge has passed, the TBU device automatically resets and reconnects the interface. During the circuit's normal operating conditions, the TBU device has a resistive characteristic with virtually zero capacitance and inductance resulting in flat insertion loss beyond 1 GHz.
