First Quarter Housing Starts Up in Peterborough

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 11, 2012) - Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) released preliminary first quarter 2012 new home construction data for the Peterborough Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) today. Builders started 47 homes in the most recent quarter, up from the 36 starts in the first quarter of 2011. Single-detached homes accounted for all of the increase while the number of starts for townhomes eased slightly.

"After a dip last year, the number of total in the first quarter this year was similar to the number in the first quarter two years ago," said CMHC's Senior Market Analyst, Ed Heese. "In contrast to last year when starts were concentrated in Peterborough City and Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield, builders started single-detached homes in every jurisdiction within the Peterborough CMA in the first quarter of this year."
