First Relay For Life in Foster City Gears Up for Strong Start

FOSTER CITY, CA--(Marketwire - Aug 6, 2012) - The Foster City Chamber of Commerce in partnership with The American Cancer Society today announced the first annual Relay For Life of Foster City taking place on Saturday and Sunday, August 25th and 26th, 2012 in the meadow area of Leo J. Ryan Park next to the Recreation Center.

The Relay For Life of Foster City is a 24-hour celebration to raise greater awareness for the fight against cancer while members of each relay team walk around the field for the duration of the event to raise funds. Fun activities and entertainment for the entire family will be offered throughout the event. Overnight camping is optional with a Saturday evening dinner provided by the Foster City Lions Club.

The event opens with the Survivor Lap at 10:00am on Saturday to honor cancer survivors for their courage and strength. The Luminaria Ceremony Saturday evening commemorates those lost to cancer. Paper bags bearing the names of loved ones are illuminated at dusk while the names on all of the bags are read to the sound of heart-felt music.

"Form a team and take part in this very special event. Or, just come over to the park and support the teams," encouraged Linda Koelling, one of the co-chairs of the event.

In fact, more than 17 teams, with 95 participants have already registered, raising a total of more than $12,000 so far.

"We're also looking for volunteers to plan or coordinate the event as well as to help with the various activities," added co-chair Pam Frisella.

In addition, local businesses are invited to become inaugural partners of Relay For Life of Foster City and to be recognized as leaders in the local community in the fight against cancer.

"We welcome Bay Area/Central California Chapter of Community Associations Institute, Foods Co., Foster City Lions Club, Gold Medal Martial Arts, Manor and the Peninsula Jewish Community Center as sponsors contributing to the success of the event," said Joanne Bohigian, Interim CEO and President of the Foster City Chamber of Commerce, the presenting sponsor.
