FIRST Robotics Quebec Event (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology): Come See Robots Shooting Hoops!

VALCOURT, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - May 16, 2012) - The J. Armand Bombardier Museum will host a three-day event from May 25 to 27. Sherbrooke high school students will show off robots designed for a North American Robotics competition. The public is invited to attend the demonstrations of those smart robots and chat with the young designers.

Students from De la Montée, Du Triolet, and Séminaire de Sherbrooke high schools will present robots playing basketball and shooting hoops. They were designed as part of the inaugural FIRST Robotics Québec competition, Rebound Rumble, held in Montreal last March. The Séminaire de Sherbrooke team won top honours and earned a spot at the Pan-American championship that took place in St. Louis last April.

The goal of this upcoming event is to make the public aware of the vital role FIRST Robotics Québec is playing in the development of the next generation, which will help maintain a high level of ingenuity in Quebec. Created 23 years ago, FIRST Robotics is a robotics mentoring program aimed at contributing to school perseverance by seeking to interest high school students in science and technology.

As a major donor, the J. Armand Bombardier Foundation has been closely associated with the creation of FIRST Robotics Quebec, whose co-founder is Laurent Beaudoin. "The values of FIRST Robotics and those of the Foundation are the same," noted Lyne Lavoie, Executive Director, J. Armand Bombardier Foundation. "Encouraging the next generation to persevere in the fields of science and technology is helping shape the youth who will follow in the steps of Joseph-Armand Bombardier."
