First-Time Parents Could Be Saving GBP 900, According to Savoo, Which is the Cost of Keeping A Baby in Nappies

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - March 22, 2011) - New parents spend over £9,000 in the first year of a child's life on essential equipment, however, according to leading deals and discounts website, Savoo, Mums and Dads could be saving 10 per cent or more of this expenditure by buying wisely and using voucher codes.

These parenting costs, from a piece of research undertaken by The Centre for Economics and Business Research for LV=, show that for those just starting a family there are many first-time expenses, including preparing the home and buying equipment for travelling.

With the average discount code giving a saving of 10 per cent, new parents who are savvy shoppers could save themselves approximately £900. This saving on purchases for a baby's first year equates to the average cost of disposable nappies for the full two and a half years a child needs them. However, even bigger discounts can be found, for example there are a number of Tesco Direct vouchers at, such as one giving 50 per cent off a Hauck Winne the Pooh Travel Cot and another with one third off Tomy Digital Plus TD300 Monitor.

Without the luxury of being able to use equipment from a previous child or having friends or family members to offer hand-me-downs, the list of first year baby fundamentals goes on and on; to name just a few, new Mums and Dads need a cot, car seat, moses basket, pram, pushchair, changing table, feeding equipment, baby bath, baby monitor, stair gate and then there is clothing, bedding, milk and potential child care costs to factor in. Currently parents can save ten per cent off all orders over £120 with Savoo's Mothercare discount code, perfect for high priced purchases, such as prams, pushchairs or all in one travel systems.

Savvy new Mum, Helen Dowley, said: "My husband and I carefully budgeted for our first child but the cost of the big items, like a cot and nursery furniture, still took us a little by surprise. We managed to save money on both large and small purchases by using discount codes and deals from Savoo, which has helped our family finances in the long run."

Simon Bird, Retail Partnerships Director at Savoo, added: "Having any child is an expensive affair but baby's first year puts a lot of pressure on parents' pockets, especially if is the first in the family. However, if Mums and Dads think savvy, plan ahead and buy as many essential items as possible on a deal or with a 10 per cent, or more, discount through they can start budgeting for year two or putting a few pounds aside for when the little one turns into a teenager."
