FirstHealth of the Carolinas Selects M*Modal for Enterprise-Wide Clinical Documentation Solutions

M*Modal Integrates Speech Understanding, Transcription, Coding and Analytics to Promote Fast and Accurate Clinical Documentation and Improved Patient Care

FRANKLIN, TN--(Marketwired - Oct 22, 2013) - M*Modal, a leading provider of clinical documentation and Speech Understanding™ solutions, today announced it will provide FirstHealth of the Carolinas with exclusive enterprise-wide front- and back-end speech recognition, transcription, coding and clinical analytics for its electronic health record (EHR) systems. These integrated services -- which include M*Modal Fluency Direct™, M*Modal Fluency for Transcription™, M*Modal Fluency for Coding™ and M*Modal Catalyst for Quality™ -- will enable FirstHealth care providers to enhance how they capture and leverage patient narratives for improved productivity, billing and patient health.

FirstHealth of the Carolinas is a private, not-for-profit health care network located in Pinehurst, North Carolina, serving 15 area counties with four hospitals (582 beds) and numerous health centers. FirstHealth was looking for an integrated solution that could work seamlessly with the various clinical documentation systems being used across the health system.

"We recognize the important role clinical documentation plays in making patient care more efficient and effective," said Cassina Hunt, Corporate Privacy Officer and Director of Health Information Management at FirstHealth. "Our ability to streamline how we capture, share and reuse clinical information from the point of admission forward is critical to physician and staff productivity. Additionally, to survive in the upcoming ICD-10 environment, more effective integration of key processes such as clinical documentation improvement, coding and billing will become increasingly important in assuring complete and timely reimbursement."

As part of this full service agreement with FirstHealth, M*Modal will deliver:

  • Advanced speech recognition and transcription software: FirstHealth will use M*Modal Fluency for Transcription and M*Modal Fluency Direct technology platforms to capture spoken dictation anytime and anywhere. M*Modal Fluency solutions provide FirstHealth with hybrid workflows (mixing transcription with front-end dictation) to capture greater insight in patient records and, through M*Modal Fluency Direct, voice-enable EHR systems to create and edit documentation at the point of care.
  • Coding tools: M*Modal Fluency for Coding delivers a unified, ICD-10 ready workflow process spanning narrative to billing. By accessing information in narratives and identifying and addressing documentation deficiencies, FirstHealth administrators can reduce the time from patient visit to reimbursement.
  • Analytics assistance: M*Modal Catalyst for Quality platform will aggregate records from across the FirstHealth system, unlocking narrative information and driving clinical documentation improvement (CDI) initiatives, quality measures and Meaningful Use readiness.

"M*Modal is enabling organizations like FirstHealth to streamline how health information is captured and used," said Duncan James, CEO of M*Modal. "Our integrated solutions preserve the patient narrative and drive insight and action from clinical documentation, which can make a big impact on the quality and efficiency of healthcare at FirstHealth."

M*Modal's solutions leverage a single, cloud-based architecture to capture clinical documentation and turn it into unstructured text and structured data that can be shared across applications and EHR systems. M*Modal Fluency and M*Modal Catalyst products let physicians and healthcare providers access trained voice profiles and clinical information across any application. M*Modal solutions integrate within clinical workflows to provide computer-assisted physician documentation (CAPD) support, such as real-time feedback on missing information, to help increase patient safety and streamline the reporting process.
