Fish & Richardson Principal Gus P. Coldebella Named "Cybersecurity & Data Privacy Trailblazer" by The National Law Journal

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwired - Jan 7, 2016) -  Fish & Richardson today announced that Gus P. Coldebella, a principal in the firm's Commercial Litigation Group and former acting General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, has been named a "Cybersecurity & Data Privacy Trailblazer" by The National Law Journal (NLJ). According to the NLJ, these trailblazers have "helped make a difference in the fight against criminal cyber activity and towards adding much needed layers of data security in an increasingly digital world of commerce."

Coldebella has spent much of his career developing the playbook for keeping companies and the country safe from cybersecurity threats. According to Coldebella, companies "don't have to sit passively by; there are tools companies can use to fight back" against cyber threats. As the former acting General Counsel of the Department of Homeland Security from 2005 to 2009, Coldebella helped lead the implementation of President Bush's Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative, designed to shore up the government's civilian networks from attack and to promote cooperation between the public and private sectors.

Since returning to private practice, Coldebella has helped companies deal with cyber incidents of all kinds, successfully bringing many through a cyber attack. As both a cybersecurity lawyer and securities litigator, he helps public companies with their SEC and corporate governance obligations before, during, and after a cyber incident. He also advises companies, boards, CEOs and GCs about managing not only the primary risk of an attack, but the secondary risks of litigation, enforcement, and reputational harm.

Coldebella advocates for companies to take a more strategic approach to cybersecurity issues, which ultimately enhances national security. He also educates companies, especially general counsel and boards of directors, on the need for developing proactive security policies that identify the full range of cyber risks and mitigate them, and make the company more resilient after an attack.

Coldebella continues to influence public policy through his work on the New York University Law School's Center on Law and Security advisory board, and as a senior fellow at George Washington University's Center for Cyber and Homeland Security, which is a nonpartisan "think and do" tank focused on homeland security, counterterrorism and cybersecurity issues.
