Fisheries and Oceans Canada: Search and Rescue Exercise on the St. Lawrence River

QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - May 20, 2008) - A real-time search and rescue exercise, jointly organized by the Societe des traversiers du Quebec (STQ) and the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG), will be held today, May 20, from 9:00 a.m. to noon on the St. Lawrence River, within the limits of the Port of Quebec.

The exercise will consist of the evacuation of passengers aboard the Quebec City-Levis ferry, the Radisson, and the emergency response of the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Tracy.

During the joint exercise, STQ staff will be testing its emergency response procedures and equipment in real time and the CCG will be verifying certain aspects relating to emergencies involving passenger vessels.

All measures will be taken to ensure the safety of the volunteer passengers and responders. The purpose of such an exercise is to test existing response mechanisms with a view to improving life-saving search and rescue operations.
