Fitness First Awarded Carbon Trust Standard

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - May 18, 2010) - The UK's largest gym group, Fitness First has become the first company of its kind to be awarded the Carbon Trust Standard.

The Carbon Trust Standard Company has recognised the group's efforts for reducing its carbon emissions over the last three years by more than 7 per cent throughout the business, which includes 160 gyms in the UK together with the head office in Dorset.

Fitness First managing director John Gamble said the company has worked hard to reduce emissions and it was tremendous to have these ongoing efforts recognised by the Carbon Trust Standard.

The Carbon Trust Standard is the premier award in the UK for organisations that have taken genuine action to measure, manage and reduce their carbon emissions.

"We have a firm commitment to the environment and to be the first major gym chain to reach this standard reinforces the fact that we continue to set benchmarks in the industry," said Mr Gamble.

"Initiatives which have helped Fitness First achieve this standard include the investment in building management systems which control air conditioning, lights, ventilation and saunas. We estimate they will have produced efficiency improvements of up to 18 per cent in each club."

Support from the whole business has been crucial in nationwide success. Savings and daily figures available to clubs have inspired managers to regularly monitor their own efficiencies and strive to be among the most energy efficient.

"By passing the assessment for the Carbon Trust Standard we are demonstrating our commitment to reducing energy use and are once again setting the benchmark within the sector that we serve," said Mr Gamble.

"We are an increasingly environmentally-conscious organisation and will continue to focus efforts on reducing energy use in our clubs and offices still further."

Harry Morrison, general manager, Carbon Trust Standard Company, said: "Being certified with the Carbon Trust Standard is proof an organisation has taken genuine action to reduce their impact on climate change by cutting carbon emissions. We congratulate Fitness First on this achievement."
