Fitness Is a Family Affair

Today's Toddlers Resolve to Be Lean, Mean Block-Stacking Machines

SHERMAN OAKS, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- February 8, 2006 -- The owners of My Gym Children's Fitness Centers discovered that resolving to get in shape for the new year is no longer just a grown-up's concern. My Gym Children's Fitness Center decided to begin running monthly contests with their kids. The most recent contest asked children, "What is your resolution for 2006?"

"As you can well imagine, the answers were cuter than cute," said Matt Hendison, executive vice president of marketing and entertainment for My Gym Children's Fitness Center. "But some of the resolutions were surprisingly telling about how children view fitness as a priority in their lives and a goal for the current year."

Several of the children's resolutions included:
-- "To do 50 sit-ups!"
-- "Start swimming lessons!"
-- "Make new friends, get more exercise and learn to say more words."
-- "Keep a healthy and happy family!"
-- "Climb a knotted rope and swing all by myself!"
-- "Enjoy My Gym, while learning social and developmental skills needed
by toddlers (my mommy helped me write this!)"
-- "I'm only 32 months, but I love to walk on the balance beam and swing
    from the monkey bars."
-- "Become involved in a team sport like toddler basketball or soccer."
-- "Practice my cartwheels and be able to do 50 sit-ups properly."
-- "Start listening better in school, buy a video camera and get rid of
    my stomach."

"As adorable as these promises are, they are an even more important reflection that young children are starting to see physical fitness as an important value," said Hendison. "And considering the frightening number of obese children in our country -- between 16 and 33 percent -- and the staggering growth of juvenile diabetes, it's a wonderful and necessary sign."

According to Hendison, this news was validation that what they're doing is working.

"They've known all along that the wonderfully engaging and fun programs the children participate in at My Gym are good for them, but to hear that the children see it as important is incredibly affirming," said Hendison. "Of course, none of the children who participated in the contest dedicated themselves to cutting down on Oreo-crumb-chocolate-chip-cookie-dough cereal, but, hey, there's always 2007."
