Five UK Destinations Listed in World's Top 100 Travel Spots

Bath Leads the Way in Awards Selected by Millions of Travellers Worldwide Edinburgh Beats London (and Paris and Rome) in Battle of Capitals Double Top for New Zealand

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - May 2, 2008) - TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel community, has announced the winners of its 2008 Travellers' Choice Destinations Awards honouring the world's top destinations based on the opinions of millions of travellers worldwide.

England's spa resort town of Bath was the highest-ranking British destination, ranking 14th in the top 100 TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice(t1) World Destinations and fourth in the list of the top 25 Traveller's Choice Europe Destinations. Typical of the traveller reviews about the town, a TripAdvisor member says: "A wonderful place to visit-like a free open air museum. We also enjoyed some of the many quaint English pubs scattered around the city."

Meanwhile, the Scottish capital of Edinburgh ranked 27th in the world's top 100 (10th in Europe's top 25), way ahead of its English rivals, York and London, which came 54th and 84th respectively. Edinburgh was also placed ahead of all other notable European tourist cities such as Florence (33rd), Paris (57th), St. Petersburg (63rd), Munich (75th), Rome (87th) and Barcelona (90th). Describing the city, a TripAdvisor member from Boston, USA, says "As both the traditional epicentre of Scottish culture and modern national capital, Edinburgh reflects both the proud past and vibrant present of the people."

Shakespeare's birthplace of Stratford-upon-Avon completes the UK's five top Traveller's Choice Destinations, ranking 67th worldwide and 25th in Europe.

The Traveller's Choice Destinations Awards represent the opinions of millions of travellers around the world. They were determined by a combination of TripAdvisor's travellers' favourite places and overall popularity on TripAdvisor, which has more than 25 million monthly visitors, six million registered members and 15 million reviews and opinions.

Two New Zealand destinations - Milford Sound and Queenstown - ranked one and two respectively in the Travellers' Choice World Destinations. Ireland had three destinations on the list- Dingle (18th), Galway (42nd) and Killarney (85th). Italy was the most popular European country with seven destinations listed in the 25 Travellers' Choice Europe Destinations.

TripAdvisor European communications manager, Ian Rumgay said, "Considering the competition from some of the most exotic, exciting and evocative locations around the world, the UK has done well to have five destinations listed in the top 100 in the world. Britain may not have too much of the exotic but it certainly does have an abundance of the exceptional, especially when it comes to cultural attractions as exemplified by Bath, Edinburgh, York, London and Stratford-upon-Avon."
