Flakka Causes 27 Deaths in Broward County Since October of Last Year

Harbor Village Detox Comments on Reuters' Recent Article on the Growing Popularity of Flakka and Its Effects on the Broward Community

MIAMI, FL--(Marketwired - Jun 26, 2015) - According to a recent report by Reuters on June 10th, the addictive synthetic alpha-pvp, Flakka, is responsible for at least 27 reported deaths in the Broward County area in South Florida. Broward County includes the cities of Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, and Davie. Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale alone reported 190 incidents of flakka in 2014 -- and as of May 275 incidents have been reported. Flakka is proving difficult for local authorities to crack down on because of its rife availability and cheap sale tag. Drug dealers sell the drug for as little as $5. Reuters quotes Detective William Schwartz, "Cocaine was king, until last year." Recently in Broward flakka has outperformed cocaine, claiming 34 percent of the substances analyzed by Broward's crime lab, while cocaine analysis decreased to 30 percent. Reuters quotes Schwartz, "That's the first time in my memory that a drug has ever surpassed cocaine. We are crossing into a new world."

Harbor Village Detox is a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in South Florida's Miami. The Miami-Dade county drug rehab facility has not seen an influx of clients detoxing from flakka, but reports regular opiate admissions. However, the treatment center asserts those struggling with flakka addiction are at increased risks of causing irreparable damage to their major organs without treatment. An associate from the Florida drug and alcohol rehab center comments,

"Flakka has invaded our community, and we're seeing the effects, but not where we would hope: in rehab. We're witnessing many incidents of young people high on flakka who are hurting themselves, and putting those around them in danger. The drug is commonly found in lower income communities, because it's so inexpensive, and easy to obtain.

"So far, there have been over a dozen flakka related incidents in our local community that I can personally recall, and not one of them resulted in getting treatment. Broward County needs to revamp its treatment admission efforts if we want to have a chance at combating flakka, which may soon climb to epidemic rates, should the popularity of the drug continue to increase."
