Following the close of Financial Literacy Month (FLM) at the end of November, the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) is pleased to announce the winners of its #FLM2014 My Financial Literacy Selfie contest.

Focused on encouraging consumers to demonstrate their financial literacy efforts, this year's contest invited Canadians to show off their financial skills by taking a selfie depicting how they were putting their financial literacy skills to use, or how they were helping to strengthen the financial literacy of others.

An FCAC jury narrowed the entries down to 12 finalists, followed by a second jury who selected the top three winners based on originality, quality and adherence to the theme. The winners are:

  • 1st place (MacBook Pro): Katrin Liivoja, Osgoode, Ontario

  • 2nd place (Mac Mini): Melanie Wong, Toronto, Ontario

  • 3rd place (iPod Touch): Jean Philippe Nadeau, Ottawa, Ontario

  • Honourable mention: Iva Lalitch, Ajax, Ontario.

One of the 12 finalists also had an opportunity to win a special People's Choice Award: a $50 iTunes gift card for the photo with the most likes on Facebook. That prize went to Lucas Buck, a eight-year-old from Squamish, British Columbia.

A second People's Choice Award, a $50 iTunes gift card, was awarded for the photograph out of the 65 contestants entered, who received the most likes on Facebook. Lindsey and Naomi Puddicombe, 15 and 12 years old, from Waverly, Nova Scotia, won the participants' People's Choice for a photo that received 206 Facebook likes.

- Launched along with the Database was a Self-assessment quiz, which allows Canadians to assess their financial literacy skills and knowledge and see how they compare to other Canadians in five areas of financial capability.

"At the end of Financial Literacy Month 2014, I'm encouraged by the growing number of Canadians and organizations addressing financial knowledge, skills and confidence. In November, more than 1,200 events were held across the country, focused on helping Canadians develop their abilities to make informed financial decisions. I'm excited about how engaging our photo contest and this year's FLM has been, and I will use this momentum to continue our year-round effort to raise awareness of the importance of financial literacy."

-Jane Rooney, Financial Literacy Leader

"This year's Financial Literacy Month has been the most successful yet. The collaboration from all sectors of the Canadian economy is making a meaningful difference in people's ability to understand their rights and responsibilities and make informed choices about money and finance. I look forward to seeing these efforts continue."
