Focus on the Solid Surface and Other Cast Polymers

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - April 16, 2008) - Reportlinker.com announces that a new market research report related to the Plastic industry industry is available in its catalogue.

Solid Surface and Other Cast Polymers

US demand to rise 3.7% annually through 2012

Demand for cast polymers is forecast to increase 3.7 percent annually to 266 million square feet in 2012. Growth will be driven by increasing consumer desire for engineered stone -- primarily engineered quartz -- which is projected to advance 7.2 percent annually to 85.5 million square feet in 2012. Homeowners are attracted to engineered quartz because of its performance and aesthetic qualities. Engineered quartz features resistance to stains, impacts, moisture and other damages caused by wear and tear. The material can be easily cleaned, and has minimal maintenance requirements, making it ideal for consumers who want a durable surfacing material.

Additionally, engineered quartz is seen as an aesthetically pleasing material. Engineered quartz can look like natural stone, or can be made in a wide range of colors not normally seen in nature. The material can also be embedded with semiprecious stones or glass chips to create a visually attractive surface. Homeowners will increasingly install engineered quartz surfaces, feeling that they enhance the beauty of a home while increasing its value.

More Details

Solid surface to remain largest cast polymer type

Solid surface will continue to account for the largest share of demand for cast polymers, and are projected to account for 42 percent of demand in 2012. However, these materials are forecast to have the lowest growth rate of all cast polymers to 2012. Gains will lag because of increased competition from such surfacing materials as engineered and natural stone, which are seen as more high-end materials; as well as from competition from less expensive materials, such as decorative laminates and tile. Solid surface demand will benefit from increased use of the material in nonresidential applications, such as schools, hospitals and other institutional facilities. Increasing recognition of solid surface as a durable material highly resistant to biological contaminants will drive advances.

Residential countertops to remain key market

Countertops will remain dominant in terms of cast polymer use, accounting for 84 percent of demand in 2007. In residential countertop applications, homeowners will continue to select cast polymers for their countertops, vanity tops and other surfaces because of their consistent performance qualities and a perception of cast polymers as aesthetically superior to more common materials, such as laminates. In nonresidential applications, demand will grow more slowly because of concerns over the high cost of cast polymers compared to other surfacing options.

Study coverage

Solid Surface & Other Cast Polymers, a new Freedonia industry study, is priced at $4500. It presents historical demand data (1997, 2002, 2007) as well as forecasts for 2012 and 2017 by material, product, end use and US region. In addition, the study assesses market environment factors, evaluates market share and profiles 40 competitors in the US industry.
