Fold Up Your Tray Tables and Buckle Up for the Plane Truth

Ancient Chinese Philosophers Might Be Responsible for Where You Sit on Planes

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 19, 2012) - So you are a seasoned traveller, you book early, get great prices and secure your ideal seat selection before the flight. Maybe you like the aisle seat so you can stretch out, or the window seat so you can get a 30,000 foot view. Maybe you like a little extra leg room afforded by sitting in front of a bulkhead or you like being at the back of the plane so you are close to the washrooms.

Every time you fly, you select the same seat because you know what you like and where you are happiest to fly. But have you ever wondered why you have such a strong and consistent preference?

The team at FlightNetwork.com, one of Canada's leaders in online travel, was wondering just that, and enlisted the help of a Feng Shui expert to explain how the ancient art impacts people's seat selection... Turns out, it might have a lot to do with the year you were born.

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese philosophy dating back over 5,000 years and is based on the principle that energy (Chi) flows through everything and everyone; its different frequencies affect everything we do, including our choice of seat in an airplane.

"One of the most important principles in Feng Shui is The Five Elements Theory," said Tila Silverio, registered Feng Shui expert. "The ancient Chinese people understood that energy vibrates in different frequencies. They carefully studied the effects of these frequencies and they classified them into five different elements: Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal."

According to Silverio, everyone is born into one of these "energies" or elements, and they very much determine your personality and your choices in life, such as why you always choose the same coffee cup, why you always sit in the same spot in your living room, or why you sit where you do on an airplane.

The Feng Shui Seating Chart:

Back of the Plane = Water element, aka I hate small talk so don't even look at me!

You are probably wearing blue or black, totally blending in with the seat. You love to travel and do so often, but since you are likely an intellectual, you despise chatty seatmates.

Front of the Plane = Fire element, aka Control freak

Opposite to Water, you want to be at the front of the airplane where the controls are. Regardless if you can afford first class, deep inside you KNOW you deserve it; you love to be treated like royalty and made to feel special.

Middle of the Plane = Earth element, aka Stuck in the MEDDLE with you

You love to be in the middle - of everything! Your seat of choice will be in the middle section of the airplane, but you may also choose the right upper side, close to the doors just in case your help may be needed, or the lower left side of the airplane (almost like an imaginary diagonal line through the centre of the airplane.) You love taking care of others and will happily engage your seatmate in conversation, mainly to offer unsolicited life advice to a total stranger.

Lower Right = Metal element, aka This seat fabric clashes with my outfit but those flight attendant uniforms are FABULOUS!

The lower right side of the airplane is reserved for you. You are fun loving and creative; the first thing you'll notice is the uniforms' style and colours and interior décor of the airplane, and you'll likely be restyling them all in your mind. You love to share and will likely offer to split your snack with your seatmate.

Upper Left = Wood element, aka Don't let this book fool you; I'm watching you.

You love books and usually spend your entire flight reading or working on your laptop. But you also possess a very keen eye for detail and note where doors and washrooms are as soon as you board the plane. You assess if everything is in order and if things go wrong - i.e. if you are late departing or landing, or if your meal is cold - you'll let your displeasure be known.
