Food Bank Launches Harvest Food Drive

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 15, 2010) - On Thursday, Sept. 23, one of Toronto's largest food banks will launch its Harvest Food Drive at North York Farmers' Market – an effort to raise 75,000 pounds of food and $75,000 for families and individuals in need in northern Toronto.

"This year, at the farmers' market and everywhere else, we're asking Torontonians to make donations that help food bank clients prepare nutritious meals," says Anette Chawla, Executive Director of North York Harvest Food Bank. "Last year, families and individuals in Toronto needed 160,000 hampers of food from our food bank – nearly 1.5 million pounds of food – and the need is still there."

Chawla and volunteers will cook up a storm during the busy market day and give samplers of the culinary treats to anyone who makes a donation at the event. The selected recipes will demonstrate how a variety of nutritious meals can be prepared using common food bank ingredients.

North York Harvest has been working with farmers for years to increase the fresh produce within its food bank network and to connect food bank clients with local food. This fall season, the North York Farmers' Market has offered to lend a hand.

"When we have an abundance, we share – our time, money and food," says Marlene McKay, Port Perry farmer and co-manager of the market. She encourages Torontonians to help the food bank attain its goals for the Harvest Food Drive.
