Food For The Poor Canada and Philanthropist Donette Chin-Loy Chang Build Lloyd's Basic School in Jamaica

TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - October 26, 2016) - Food For The Poor Canada (FFPC) announces its 20th school build in Jamaica. Lloyd's Basic School in the parish of St. Thomas is being constructed with the financial support of Donette Chin-Loy Chang, in memory of her late husband, G. Raymond Chang.

According to Samantha Mahfood, Executive Director of Food For The Poor Canada, "Ray was FFPC's advocate and Patron; his wisdom and vision are missed, however Donette, as Co-Chair of the board, continues to uphold Ray's focus on education. We continue to support Food For The Poor's commitment to early childhood education and are excited to be building the 20th school funded by Canadians. Food For The Poor Jamaica has built 80 schools in the last four years, funded by donors from Jamaica, the US and Canada."

Like his wife, Ray Chang was born in Jamaica and spent most of his adult life in Canada but always had a passion and commitment to his homeland. Humanitarians with a focus on sustainability and education, the Chang family continues a legacy of helping to build communities through the Raymond Chang Foundation and organizations like Food For The Poor.

"Ray and I always had a broad vision for our involvement with Jamaica, the wider Caribbean and Canada, one that focuses on key sectors like health, education and business. My role as Co-Chair of Food For The Poor Canada enables me to be fully engaged, and the building of early childhood schools is one of several ways I continue to stay connected and share Ray's dream for Jamaica. It's about helping to build communities and in some way enable a better life for the next generation," stated Chin-Loy Chang.

St. Thomas is a sparsely populated parish in Jamaica, and many communities get by with subsistence farming. The school serves a community of about 2,500 people. Lloyd's Basic School is currently in a small, one-room building that shares space with other community services, including the church. The new construction will include an office, sickbay, kitchen, three classrooms, and a brand-new playground, offering children from ages three to five a more ideal space in which to learn.

"Our dad believed that education 'levels the playing field' -- and that each child deserves a chance to have full access to the best education possible. He was also passionate about lifelong learning -- a key component to breaking down barriers. Andrew and I are proud of the building of Lloyd's Basic School in dad's memory," said Brigette Chang Addorisio.

Principal Elesha Cuthbert recognizes that the new and improved school will create an environment for children to better work, play and interact with their peers. It will strengthen and empower the children, their family and the entire community.

Among the volunteers who accompanied FFPC and Chin-Loy Chang on the build were two former St. Thomas residents -- Wes Hall and Wayne Purboo. Like Ray Chang, both Hall and Purboo are successful business leaders who are committed to the development of their communities, both in Canada and in the land of their birth, Jamaica.

Lloyd's Basic School build was enjoyed by both the volunteers and the school children in the community of Lloyd's district, St. Thomas, on Thursday, October 20th 2016.
