Food, Social and Ceremonial Lobster Fishery for the Listuguj Mi'gmaq Community

CITY OF QUEBEC, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - Sept. 16, 2015) - The Listuguj Mi'gmaq community in the Gaspé Peninsula will carry out its food, social and ceremonial lobster fishing in Chaleur Bay between September 20 and October 10, 2015. This fishery, protected under section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982, which recognizes and confirms the ancestral and treaty rights of the aboriginal peoples of Canada, is authorized under an agreement between the Mi'gmaq community and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO).

Members of the Listuguj community will fish only in fishing area 21B (Chaleur Bay) and are entitled to use a maximum of 500 traps in total. A strict monitoring protocol has been established, and DFO fishery officers will closely monitor activities in collaboration with Rangers from the community of Listuguj. Listuguj Rangers will also inspect landings, compile statistics and assist in efforts to prevent poaching, in collaboration with the Department's fishery officers.
