HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwire - Jan 18, 2013) - Dozens of area restaurants will compete for "culinary survival" in the First Annual Hungry Games, on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 benefitting Will's Kids. With an appreciative nod to The Hunger Games, the box office blockbuster that earned six People's Choice Awards last week, the organizers hope to generate enthusiasm for their event and cause.
"The popularity of this film is undeniable," observes Janet Hayes, Executive Director of Will's Kids, "and there are some parallels in our message and the author's. The mission of Will's Kids is about empowering children and putting them on a path to success in life, and we hope to engage new supporters through this pop culture connection."
The competing Hungry Games hospitality providers, dubbed the "Tributes," will each prepare a signature dish for their designated table, judged on both presentation and culinary excellence. Judges include News 92 FM midday anchors Carolyn Campbell and Kevin Charles, and Corey Turner from Houston Community Newspapers. For a complete list of participating restaurants, caterers, cafes and country clubs, visit www.WillsKids.org.
Children from the Will's Kids organization will act as waiters ("Captain Citizens"). The evening will also include live and silent auctions, plus live music by the renowned DivisiStrings, The Dover Brothers and Bob's Your Uncle.
Tickets are $100 per person, available online at www.WillsKids.org. Doors open at 6pm, at 804 Russell Palmer Road, Kingwood, TX 77339. Interested sponsors, patrons and donors may contact Janet Hayes at (281) 594-0548.
About Will's Kids
Will's Kids is the legacy of Will Askew, a man who loved without condition and gave service without expectation of reward. Will's Kids subsidizes activities for children, mentors teens, and provides afterschool programs for children. Incorporated in 2008 by the Hayes family, Will's Kids is founded on the fundamental belief that every child should have the chance to succeed. The programs target ages 4-18, and include youth development, educational assistance, and dropout prevention. These programs empower low-income and at-risk youth to succeed through cultural arts, sports and educational endeavors. Will's Kids supports America's Promise Alliance in fighting to reduce school dropout rates and encourage higher education. For more information, visit www.WillsKids.org.
