For California's Star, Seattle Is Ground Zero in Launch of New Olive Oils

California Brand Chooses Emerald City to Test Its Mediterranean Products, Including Its First California-Grown Extra Virgin Olive Oil

FRESNO, CA--(Marketwire - Sep 19, 2011) - If you can make it in the kitchens and restaurants of Seattle, home to some of the most discriminating Mediterranean cuisine-loving foodies and families in the world, you can make it anywhere.

That's the thinking of Star Fine Foods, the 113-year-old California importer of olive oils and Mediterranean specialty foods that is rolling out a host of new products in the Emerald City before launching them nationally. The products include grapeseed oil, infused aromatic oils and an extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) made from olives grown in the Holy Land -- as well as the first California-grown EVOO set for major release in the company's long history.

Due to the popularity of olive oil and Mediterranean cooking in the Pacific Northwest, Star is partnering with Seattle chefs, restaurants, food bloggers and other local influencers to test and sample these new products before expanding distribution later this year.

Based in Fresno, Calif., Star is among the nation's oldest and most distinguished makers of Mediterranean specialty products, known for its locally distinctive olive oils produced from some of richest olive-growing regions of the world.

New Star products that are being tested in Seattle this month include:

  • Star® California Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) -- A blend of fresh, first cold-pressed Arbequina, Arbosana and Koroneiki olives grown in California's Central Valley. It is now available in Seattle supermarkets and specialty food retailers in 16- and 24-ounce glass bottles for the suggested retail price of $9.45 and $12.98, respectively.

  • Borges/Star Keren Or® Holy Land Olive Oil -- A blend of fresh, unsprayed, tree-ripened, cold-pressed olives grown in Golan Heights region in Israel. It offers memorable aromas, fruity notes, and rich taste.

  • Star® Grapeseed Oil -- Produced from Spanish and French grapeseeds, offering light and nutty overtones intended to bring out the flavors of fried and baked foods. With a low saturated fat content, it can be substituted for vegetable oil in any recipe as a healthier alternative. It also has a smoke point of 485 degrees, and a lower risk of burning and splattering than other oils.

  • Star® Family Reserve Natural Aromatic Oils -- Created by Ferran Andrià of elBulli Restaurant, and available in four refreshing infusions: Lemon Peel, Fresh Rosemary, Roasted Garlic and Fresh Basil.

According to Freeman, Seattle residents who try Star's new California-grown EVOO can expect memorable aromas, fruity notes and a peppery finish that is uniquely complementary to Star's olive oils grown in the Mediterranean region.

Star partners with Emran Chowdhury, executive chef of Cantinetta in Seattle, to host a Sept. 22, 2011 "A Taste of the Good Life" olive oil dinner event to introduce food bloggers, chefs and local residents to the taste and pairing possibilities of Mediterranean and California olive oils.
