For Second Year in a Row, Walmart Tops List as Nation's Most Searched Business Using GPS

Washington D.C. Overtakes Maryland as Area With Highest Average of GPS Navigation Trips, According to TeleNav Data Analysis

SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwire - March 17, 2011) - TeleNav, Inc. (NASDAQ: TNAV), one of the largest global wireless location-based services providers, today released results of its annual usage data* analysis identifying trends in Americans' use of GPS technology. Results from this year's analysis suggest that people continue to rely on mobile GPS technology to guide them along the Nation's roadways, avoid traffic, and help them find their favorite destinations, including Walmart which topped the list as the most searched destination for the second straight year.

An analysis of the local business searches completed by TeleNav subscribers in December 2010 found that searches for Walmart were more than double the number of searches conducted for second place Target. Starbucks, which took the second spot in last year's analysis, fell to the third spot this year, indicating that some Americans may have cut back on their morning 'cup of Joe.' Electronics retailer Best Buy took the fourth spot on the list while Chase Bank rounded out the top five, bumping last year's number five business, Bank of America, out of the top five standings.

TeleNav subscribers reside and drive in every state and U.S. territory, but the data analysis showed that some areas depend on GPS guidance more than others. TeleNav's usage data for the entire 2010 year indicates that residents of Washington, D.C. were the most frequent users of GPS guidance, using the technology for nearly three times as many trips per month than residents of Montana, the state with the least frequent mobile GPS users.

Last year's most frequent GPS users resided in the state of Maryland, which falls to the second spot this year closely behind Washington, D.C. Completing the top five areas with residents relying heavily on GPS navigation to guide them are Georgia, California and Virginia, respectively. California cracked the top five in 2009, while Georgia and Virginia are newcomers in this year's analysis.

TeleNav data for all local business searches conducted using its GPS applications for the entire 2010 year indicated that not much has changed in a year when it comes to the U.S. cities where people need the most assistance from GPS to find local businesses and attractions. Results from 2010 mirror those of 2009, with Los Angeles taking the number one position as the city where most GPS searches occurred during the year. The Dallas/Ft. Worth area followed in second, while Chicago, Houston and Atlanta, respectively, rounded out the top five U.S. cities where most GPS searches took place in both 2009 and 2010.

"Our focus is on understanding our customers, how they use our navigation products in their daily lives and which features they rely on most," said Dariusz Paczuski, vice president of marketing for TeleNav. "By analyzing the usage data of our large customer base, we're able to identify how and why our products are used to help us create a more personalized experience that helps people decide where they want to go and how they want to get there."

TeleNav's annual usage data analysis also examined the cuisine preferences of American drivers while they're on the road looking for a bite to eat. Search data from December 2010 showed that Pizza is the top food item searched for by subscribers of TeleNav's GPS applications for the second year in a row. Residents of Chicago led the nation as the city that conducted the most searches for Pizza, just as they did in 2009.

TeleNav's usage data also suggests that Chicagoans have similar tastes in food as the rest of Americans as it also took the top honors as the city that conducted the most searches for the number two most searched cuisine type in the U.S., American, and the third most popular cuisine, Chinese. Chinese fell one spot from its second place ranking in the 2009 results. Rounding out the top five of America's most searched cuisine types are Burgers and Mexican, respectively.

Although vehicles and the technology in them continue to advance, one thing remains a constant for American drivers -- traffic. TeleNav mobile navigation products provide users with real-time traffic information and the option to route around traffic incidents to help relieve the stress of traffic congestion. TeleNav's data found that residents of Chicago chose to use GPS navigation to reroute around traffic more than any other city in the nation. Last year's number one city, Los Angeles, which is well known for its traffic issues, took the second spot falling behind Chicago.

Other top five cities where drivers preferred to use GPS to get around traffic included Dallas in the number three spot, Atlanta in the fourth, and Houston rounding out the top five. With San Antonio taking the number 10 spot, Texas has three cities in the top 10 of areas where people chose to use GPS to avoid traffic congestion.

In addition to real-time traffic information, TeleNav products also help users make the most of their driving experience by providing real-time gas prices for nearby stations. Data from December 2010 indicates that residents of Baltimore may be looking to save a buck at the pump more than those in other cities in America, as residents of the city averaged more Gas by Price searches than any other city in the country.

In a close second, residents of Cleveland also conducted an above average number of Gas by Price searches. Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham and Phoenix, respectively, rounded out the top five cities with cost-conscious drivers looking to save when filling up. Phoenix took the top spot in last year's data analysis.
