Ford at Diversity Debate: "Diversity Is Not My Priority"

Councillor Rob Ford Draws Sharp Rebuke For Put-Down From Surging Rossi At Diversity Debate

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 11, 2010) - Councillor Rob Ford told a crowd that "diversity is not my priority," causing cries of outrage from the audience of a Diversity Debate held this evening at Ryerson University.

Councillor Ford's comments drew an instant rebuke from Mayoral candidate Rocco Rossi who said that he was "appalled to be at the same table as [Councillor Ford]."

"Councillor Ford sees new-comers as a drain on our city" said Rossi to cheers from the audience. "My parents were immigrants, your parents were immigrants, and they worked hard. They weren't a drain on this city, they built this city!"

Rossi took his opponents to task on a number of issues and outlined his positive vision for Toronto.

"If we want diversity at City Hall we need accountability" said Rossi. "We need term limits and recall so that city politicians don't have a job for life and we can have new thinking at Council."

Following the debate, Rossi said he was proud to have the opportunity to defend Toronto's diversity and fight for accountability at City Hall. "Councillor Ford has spent ten years on City Council behaving irresponsibly and embarrassing Toronto," said Rossi. "I am the man to beat him because I know that we need to take back City Hall and I have a responsible plan to do it."
