Forest Products Industry Welcomes the EU Free Trade Agreement

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Oct. 18, 2013) - The Canada Wood Group, representing key Forest Industry Trade Associations across Canada, today welcomed the government's action to reach a framework agreement with the European Union on establishing a comprehensive free trade zone encompassing the primary sectors of the economy.

The EU market for forest products, although small at 3% of export volume to world markets, continues to represent some of the higher grade forest products resulting in the EU representing 6% of the value of exports.

"The forest products industry continues to be one of Canada's economic drivers and with a free trade agreement markets in the EU will continue to represent a small but vital market for many Canadian companies. Agreements of this nature are critical in removing barriers to trade allowing our member companies to work their way further into the markets. This in turn allows a greater number of customers, such as those in the EU, to understand the advantages that Canadian forest products can provide over others in terms of quality assurance, the variability of species and products available that are unparalleled," said Paul Newman, President of Canada Wood.

Canada Wood is the collaboration of 10 Canadian forest industry trade associations. Canada Wood is a national approach to offshore market development representing lumber, wood-based panels, value-added and engineered wood products, and manufactured housing.
