"Forget Tennis Elbow, Texting Thumb is the New Trend" Says Burnaby Physiotherapy Clinic

Burnaby Physiotherapy Clinic Warns That Smartphone Related Pain and Injuries Are on the Rise

VANCOUVER, BC--(Marketwired - March 16, 2016) - Have you noticed strange pains when using your smartphone? If your hands ache or tingle after playing with your phone, you could be suffering from a condition that's become known as texting thumb. "With the prevalence of smartphones and mobile video games, more and more people are coming in reporting soreness in their thumbs, wrists and forearms," says a clinic representative. "This condition most commonly affects middle-aged adults, especially women, who account for over 80% of cases."

The three muscles responsible for extending your thumb to play with your smartphones have trigger points that are in close proximity to one another; their main referral pattern is pain and tenderness over the back of your wrist and thumb that radiates up your forearm.

To check if you have texting thumb, make a fist with the thumb inside the fingers. Then gently apply pressure to the fist so that your pinky moves closer to your wrist.

If you experience the same pain while texting, you may have texting thumb. Other symptoms include weak grip or pinch strength and minor swelling at the base of the thumb on the affected hand.

To alleviate the pain, try this simple exercise:

1. Put your hand out as if you are about to make a handshake.

2. Bend your wrist away from your thumb like in the test mentioned above.

3. Use your other hand to passively flex your thumb down towards the ground.

"If this doesn't reduce pain, you should consult with a licensed physiotherapist, chiropractor, or massage therapist for more information. Catching the signs of repetitive injuries early can greatly prevent the onset of chronic pain later in life."
