Former Female Executive Files Multi-Million Dollar Lawsuit Against Dolby Laboratories Inc. Charging Gender Discrimination

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- September 6, 2005 -- A former female top-level executive of Dolby Laboratories Inc. (NYSE: DLB), Hui See Tan, has filed a lawsuit against Dolby Laboratories charging gender discrimination. The suit seeks millions of dollars in damages.

In the lawsuit, Tan claims Dolby discriminates against female employees in promotions, compensation and job assignments in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII) and California's Fair Employment and Housing Act. Tan also charges Dolby with fraud, breach of contract, and unfair business practices. The lawsuit comes on the heels of a lawsuit filed against retail giant Wal-Mart claiming similar gender-based discrimination.

With over 14 years of industry experience, Tan was credited with the expansion of Dolby's China and Asian-Pacific business. Tan quickly rose to the level of managing director of Dolby's Hong Kong Licensing office until, Tan claims, Dolby decided to replace her with a less-qualified man in 2004.

According to the suit, Dolby eliminated Tan by creating a position over her and then filling it with an unqualified man who neutralized her authority and created a hostile work environment. When Tan complained, Dolby retaliated against her by hurriedly changing the locks to her office and firing her staff. Tan was officially fired thereafter.

The suit claims that Tan's treatment by Dolby is part of a pattern of gender-based discrimination practiced by the technology giant for years. Women, the suit alleges, have been historically relegated to lower-paying jobs and systematically denied advancement opportunities. Out of the approximately 29-30 top-level corporate officers of the company, the suit claims, only two are women. No women comprise Dolby's board of directors.
