Former Representative Ron Erhardt Endorses Kevin Staunton for Minnesota House of Representatives

After 18 Years as a Republican Representative and Party Leader, Erhardt Backs DFL-Endorsed Kevin Staunton Citing His Moderate and Fiscally-Responsible Leadership

EDINA, MN--(Marketwire - September 30, 2010) -  Today, Ron Erhardt issued a strong recommendation to former constituents in Edina (41A) to vote for Democrat Kevin Staunton in the upcoming State House race.

"Kevin Staunton is the best candidate for Edina. Staunton is pragmatic, moderate and attuned to Edina's interests," said Erhardt. "My 2008 predictions about [his opponent] Keith Downey have come true. I predicted his extreme fiscal and social views would not represent the best interests of his Edina constituents."

After 18 years as a Republican representative from Edina, Erhardt's endorsement breaks rank with his former party yet again. In 2008 Erhardt and other moderate Republicans voted to override Governor Tim Pawlenty's veto of the transportation bill -- a vote that ultimately cost him the Republican endorsement.

Expressing concern Downey's conservative voting record does not fit the district, Erhardt told Edina voters, "Fortunately there is a viable alternative to Downey's extremism and that would be to elect Kevin Staunton. If you're looking to continue Edina's traditional support of fiscal responsibility and social moderation, please join me in voting for Kevin on November 2."

"I have appreciated Ron's counsel over the last several months of campaigning. I am honored to receive his endorsement and look forward to continuing his tradition of moderate representation in St. Paul," said Staunton.
