Fortinet Helps Secure Networks at 95 Hardee's Franchise Locations

Leading Unified Threat Management (UTM) Vendor Customizes Security for Restaurants

SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwire - March 10, 2008) - Fortinet® -- a pioneer and leading provider of unified threat management (UTM) solutions -- today announced that nearly 100 Hardee's quick-service and fast-casual dining franchises have deployed Fortinet's FortiGate™ multi-threat appliances to help secure the Point of Sale (POS) network, the new customer facing wireless network and the franchisee's core network.

As retail and quick service restaurant environments move from frame relay networks to "open" broadband Internet access and wireless networks, security becomes more critical. As a result, the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) was created. The federal compliance requirement mandates that organizations that process card payments prevent credit card fraud, hacking and various other security issues.

Part of PCI compliance is a requirement stating that there is firewall segmentation between wireless networks and the point of sale networks or any network that comes in contact with credit card information. Paradigm Investment Group, a 95 unit Hardee's franchisee, also had to meet another PCI compliance requirement of having an intrusion prevention (IPS) solution to detect unauthorized wireless networks and attacks. With Fortinet's multi-threat approach to network security, Paradigm's locations are able to provide both the firewall and intrusion prevention protection required by law -- in a single appliance.

Paradigm needed to select a network security solution specifically designed to meet the needs of each of their restaurant locations.

"Managing multiple restaurant locations nationwide, it was very important for us to select a network security solution that was cost-effective, easy to use and offered central management while ensuring Federal compliance regulations," said Greg May, chief technology officer at Paradigm. "The FortiGate product line is allowing us to offer enterprise-level network security to our restaurants as well as complying with government regulations such as PCI mandates."

Paradigm Investment Group deployed Fortinet's FortiWifi™-60B appliances to help protect each its franchise networks using firewall, IPS and Web content filtering protection. The FortiWifi-60B brings new power and flexibility to enterprise branch offices and retail outlets as their needs for protection and compliance continue to grow.

A new service being offered to customers since deploying Fortinet is that select Paradigm (Hardee's) restaurants are offering the ability for patrons to connect wirelessly to the Internet to check email or get directions to their next destination. Using the FortiWifi-60B, wireless connectivity is now an option and using Fortinet's FortiGuard™ Web content filtering subscription service, Paradigm's franchise locations are further utilizing the FortiGate solutions to ensure that restaurant patrons can only access authorized Internet sites and that offensive Websites are not surfed in the child-friendly restaurant. URL updates are pushed directly to the FortiGate devices, thereby improving security and reducing administrative headaches.

Located at the Pardigm Investment's headquarters is a FortiGate-300A which is helping to provide firewall, IPS and Web content protection for the main network. In addition, a FortiManager™-400 has been deployed to easily and centrally manage the 95 appliances located at nationwide franchises.

"Paradigm Investment Group was looking to simplify management and consolidate network security functionalities into a single appliance," said Karl Soderlund, vice president of Americas sales and business development for Fortinet. "The FortiGate appliance and management solution meets that need by providing security to protect against network and content level threats, superior ease-of-management and flexible connectivity options -- ideally meeting the needs of smaller network environments like Hardee's franchised locations owned by Paradigm."

Fortinet's FortiGate systems are ASIC-accelerated security appliances that integrate essential security applications such as antivirus, firewall, VPN, intrusion prevention, Web filtering, anti-spam and traffic shaping. All FortiGate systems are kept up to date automatically by Fortinet's FortiGuard Network, which helps ensure protection against the most damaging, content-based threats from email and Web traffic such as viruses, worms, intrusions, other unwanted network traffic and more -- around the clock and around the world. FortiGate systems are centrally managed by Fortinet's FortiManager appliances which minimize the administrative effort required to deploy, configure, monitor and maintain the full range of network protection services provided by Fortinet products.
