Fortress McGuinty: Day 4 on the Campaign of Fear

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 13, 2007) - It's only Day 4 of the official campaign period and Dalton McGuinty is already sending signals that he and his campaign team will go to startling lengths to avoid having to answer reporters' questions about his record.

Among the devices employed so far by the nimble tacticians behind Fortress McGuinty:

The Ol' Human Lens Cap Trick: "But Liberal organizers used the off-duty firefighters, who were waiting to be part of McGuinty's photo-op inside the hotel, to block television cameras from getting a shot of the premier near the (Canadian Taxpayers' Federation 'Pinocchio') protester. McGuinty dismissed repeated questions on whether it was appropriate to use the firefighters to block the cameras. 'I've asked them to keep the media away from me at all costs,' he laughed." - Canadian Press, 12 September 2007

The "Dateline Dalton" Defence: "Late this afternoon the Liberals' campaign office made accusations against CHCH News in relation to the story you just saw (about a Hamilton developer who confronted McGuinty). Because the developer told us he was going to confront the Premier we put a wireless microphone on him. The media advisor accused CHCH News of staging the event." - CHCH News, 11 September 2007

Questionable Period: "Clearly, the campaign brought a new strategy that recognized that the more a political leader with a record in office talks the more likely it is that he will get into trouble. So Mr. McGuinty fielded questions - responding with answers that were not entirely fresh - for exactly 10 minutes and when he started to leave the room as some reporters were still vying to ask questions that were now destined to be left unasked." - Murray Campbell's blog, theGlobeandMail.com, 11 September 2007

In less than a week, McGuinty has not just taken a page from Stephen Harper's media control handbook, he has dog-eared the pages and sticky-flagged the really good parts of his tattered copy.

If the McGuinty Liberals are already this afraid to defend their record, how can they expect working Ontarians to trust them for another four years?
