Founder of Global Leadership Adventures Recognized by President Obama

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwired - November 07, 2013) - Fred Swaniker, Founder of Global Leadership Adventures, which facilitates service-learning and volunteer summer programs for teens, was recognized at the Young African Leaders Initiative Town Hall in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The President of the United States of America Barack Obama commended Fred Swaniker, co-founder of Global Leadership Adventures (GLA) for his critical role in helping young Africans develop their leadership skills.

President Obama was in South Africa, as well as Senegal and Tanzania, to demonstrate the United States' continued support in strengthening Africa's democratic institutions, developing the next generation of African leaders, and expanding economies through strategic and sustainable entrepreneurialism.

At the Young African Leaders Initiative Town Hall, President Obama personally recognized Swaniker and thanked him for his great work.

"We want to empower entrepreneurs like Fred Swaniker," the President said during the event at the University of Johannesburg.

"Fred helped to start a biotech company, and now uses his expertise to help other young Africans develop their leadership skills so that they can come back and put those skills to use serving their communities, starting businesses, creating jobs. So thank you, Fred, for the great work that you're doing."

Swaniker has also been recognized as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, selected as one of the 10 Youngest Power Men in Africa by Forbes, and been named a TED Fellow. He is the Founder and CEO of the African Leadership Academy (ALA), an incredibly competitive two-year leadership program in Johannesburg that is designed to prepare leaders and entrepreneurs across fields.

The inspiring vision that Swaniker has brought to the ALA has also shaped Global Leadership Adventures, for which he still serves on the Board of Directors. Swaniker states, "The mission of GLA is to inspire the next generation to realize their potential to transform the world and their role in it." Through GLA's summer volunteer programs abroad in Asia, Africa and Latin America, high school students develop leadership skills, open their eyes to new possibilities and learn about their role in the world.
