Attention: Sports Editor, Travel/Tourism Editor BELOEIL--(CCNMatthews - Sept. 20, 2005) - Vaughan Peckham of London, Ont., Chris Ingram of Brampton, Ont., Richard Laroche of Candiac, Que. and Richard Stevens of Middlebury, CT shot one-over-par 72's on a windy day at Beloeil Golf Club to take a share of the opening-round lead at the 2005 Canadian Men's Senior Championship, conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA).

"The course was really tough so I just kept grinding away because I knew there would be a lot of high scores," said local favourite Richard Laroche of Candiac, Que. "I made some good putts and I know the course fairly well so it helped out a lot."

Donald Meyer of Washington, DC, Denis Eamon Murphy of Amherstburg, Ont. and Steve Earsley of Stuart, FL are tied for fifth at two-over-par 73 while six others hold a share of eighth at 74.

In the 70 and over Super Senior division, two-time Canadian Men's Senior champion Patrick Suraj of Etobicoke, Ont. leads with an opening-round 77. Norman Hertz of Oakville, Ont., Michael Harrington of Toronto, Ont. and Eamonn McCormack of St. Bruno, Que. are tied for second with opening round 80's.

Two-time Canadian Senior champion and seven-time Canadian Mid-Amateur champion Graham Cooke is five-shots back of the lead and sits tied for 32nd with 13 other competitors, including fellow past champions George Stokes of Kitchener, Ont. and Patrick Suraj of Etobicoke, Ont.

In the race for the Inter-provincial team title, the Manitoba foursome of Don Jackson of Portage La Prairie (75), David McLeod of Winnipeg (81), Ken Mould of Winnipeg (74) and Gavin Speirs of Winnipeg (78) shot a team-total 227 to share the lead with Nova Scotia. The foursome of Adrian De Graaf of Coldbroor (80), Graham MacIntyre of Windsor Junction (75), David McDonald of Windsor Junction (77), and Gerry Smith of Halifax (75) posted a good opening round total and hope to defend the provinces crown from 2004. Following close behind in third is Alberta at 229 and Ontario in fourth at 230.
