FPSC Welcomes Appointment of Financial Literacy Leader

Role will help equip Canadians with vital financial knowledge and skills

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - April 16, 2014) - Financial Planning Standards Council (FPSC), a not-for-profit standards-setting and certification body that develops, promotes and enforces professional financial planning standards through CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® certification, welcomes the appointment of Jane Rooney as Canada's first-ever Financial Literacy Leader.

"FPSC has long had a vision for a future where financial literacy and sound financial behaviour are taught as important life skills, much like numeracy, reading and writing," says Cary List, President & CEO. "We are pleased to see an appointment made in this important role and look forward to working together with Ms. Rooney to achieve our mutual goals of helping equip all Canadians with the financial knowledge and skills they need."

FPSC is a founding member of the Financial Literacy Action Group (FLAG), a coalition of non-profit organizations that have joined together to raise awareness of the need for financial literacy and to highlight the programs, services and tools available to help Canadians strengthen their financial literacy. FPSC also presented recommendations to Canada's Task Force on Financial Literacy.

A key component of financial literacy is knowing when the guidance of a financial professional is needed, and what to look for in a financial professional, according to List.

"Today's consumers are in the most vulnerable and precarious financial position we have experienced in decades," adds List. "Knowledge as to how to choose appropriately qualified financial professionals who possess the right knowledge, skills, abilities and ethics to guide consumers is now more important than ever."

Five years ago, FPSC identified financial education as one of the key components of its "Vision 2020" initiative. Among the five key components of FPSC's Vision 2020 is that all high school graduates will have experienced some introductory financial planning curriculum by the time they graduate, and thus will be able to make better-informed decisions about their finances. FPSC looks forward to working with Ms. Rooney to help guide Canada towards achievement of this vision.
