Fractional Laser Resurfacing for Serious Skin Issues

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwired - May 17, 2016) - Fractional laser resurfacing is a boon to people with serious skin problems. Laser resurfacing is termed the "anti-aging breakthrough of the 21st Century," but it actually works on a variety of conditions, not just problems caused by time, like lines and sunspots.

This type of laser skin resurfacing can get rid of dark spots, improve the look of deep-in wrinkling, make your skin look younger overall, improve acne scars and correct irregular pigmentation.

What Is Fractional Laser Resurfacing?

The term fractional laser resurfacing is used for two separate procedures, called ablative and non-ablative. Ablative fractional laser resurfacing is the more aggressive treatment and takes a significant amount of time for recovery. Non-ablative is gentler, the results are milder and less dramatic. You need just a few days for recovery.

Here is a closer look at the two methods.

This type of resurfacing stimulates collagen production in your skin. The collagen makes your skin plump up, which fills in wrinkles and lines. Your skin looks smoother, more supple and firmer. The process actually takes place deep in the epidermis of the skin so there is little discomfort and downtime.

Age, pollution and sun destroy collagen. The result is saggy skin and blotchy patches. With the laser, light energy makes miniscule pinpricks deep down in the skin, which triggers the development of collagen. These pinpricks are actually hundreds of tiny wounds that leave the skin around them undamaged.

It is a newer method and less invasive than traditional ablative resurfacing. It requires several treatments, usually two to three over a six-month period. But there is very little time needed for recovery and very little risk.

For pain, all that is needed is a topical anesthetic and cooling agents. The procedure works well on mild to moderate skin problems.

This method of resurfacing vaporizes the outermost layer of skin with an intense light beam. This allows new, fresh skin to make it to the surface. It is a much more aggressive treatment than non-ablative. Considered an outpatient surgical procedure, it requires sedation or anesthesia for the patient because of the pain.

It works on acne scars, deep wrinkles, irregular pigmentation and unwanted lesions. The results are dramatic, but it does have limits. It won't help skin that is seriously sagging or for very deep wrinkling.

Recovery takes two to four weeks. Patients often need pain medication for part of that period. The good news is you need just the one treatment, which takes 30 minutes to two hours.
