Fragmentation Prevention and Backup Speed

BURBANK, CA--(Marketwire - December 28, 2009) - Backups are critically important, especially today when the vast majority of business is conducted by -- and stored on -- computers. As testament to the importance of this function, one only needs to take a cursory glance at the sheer number of backup solutions available, both in the form of hardware and software. NAS, SAN, backup utilities, as well as the backup functions available in many applications -- figuring them all out and having them work optimally together are practically the stuff of its own college degree.

Nearly of equal importance to the existence of backups in the first place is their speed. Most enterprises have a fixed time window in which backups must occur so as not to interfere with normal production. A great deal of know-how -- probably as much as that applied to backups themselves -- is regularly addressed to making backups happen in a timely manner.

Undercutting all the load balancing, hardware specs, choice of backup solutions and many other factors that go into backup speed is one that can make or break a backup time: file fragmentation. When files are split into many pieces (fragments), the number of I/Os needed to retrieve them for backup can be horrendous. Many are the sites that have found themselves with failed backups simply and only because the drives to be backed up are plagued by file fragmentation.

Many companies today are finding out that the best method of handling fragmentation -- and hence ensuring backups occur in a timely manner -- is to prevent a majority of it in the first place with Diskeeper® Performance Software.

"In regard to reliability, Diskeeper 2010 has certainly helped to keep our backups inside a reasonable window," said Stefan J Floyhar, IT Systems Engineer with Ferrara Pan Candy Company of Forest Park, Illinois. "It has helped to cut the backup and restore windows by hours."

Utilizing a new revolutionary technology called IntelliWrite™ fragmentation prevention, Diskeeper 2010 intelligently writes files to the disk to prevent up to 85 percent of fragmentation from occurring. Coupled with superior defragmentation technology, Diskeeper 2010 delivers a complete performance solution for every Windows system at every site, and goes far beyond what defragmentation alone can achieve. Significant savings are also achieved by reducing energy consumption and cooling -- even more than is done with conventional defragmentation.

"IntelliWrite helps to prevent fragmentation on the entire system as it happens," Floyhar added. "When we first installed Diskeeper, we initially noticed a significant decrease in the amount of time it took to backup our file server. We've also noticed an increase in performance of network files (open/save times). I would highly recommend this software to professionals and home users alike."

Before going for all the expensive and complicated adjustments in backup technologies, make sure fragmentation is fully addressed -- with Diskeeper.
