Franchise Direct Publishes the Top 100 Global Franchises for 2012

ATLANTA, GA--(Marketwire - Apr 11, 2012) - Franchise Direct (www.FranchiseDirect.com) has released its fourth-annual rankings of the Top 100 Franchises, the country's most definitive measurement of international franchising success. These rankings not only assess the most successful franchises operating on an international level, but the accompanying report outlines the trends that will shape global franchising during the next 12 months and beyond.

Every spring, Franchise Direct publishes its Top 100 Global Franchise rankings. To be eligible, a franchise must operate businesses in two or more countries. The exact rankings are compiled by collating a range of data, including information self-reported by franchises, FDD documents, SEC filings, published industry sources, on top of other information pertaining to the financial state of the franchise.

For the second year in a row, Subway is the world's leading franchise, according to the Franchise Direct rankings. The franchising giant continues to bring its sandwiches to the world, and has again outranked McDonald's to claim the spot as the top franchise on the planet. Notably, as with every other year that Franchise Direct has assessed the world's best franchises, the top ten, and indeed the top 100, is dominated by quick-service restaurant concepts.

Each year, the Top 100 reveals greater growth for non-American franchise concepts, and the 2012 list is no different, with 16 franchises based outside of the country included in the rankings. This is the biggest ever contribution of non-American franchises to the Top 100 Global Franchise list. The report also highlights the major gains made in Eastern European franchising. While the economic gains made by the BRIC countries has been highlighted extensively in the media, smart franchises are waking up to the potential in Eastern Europe and the report outlines the factors creating this boom.

Franchising, a business system made popular by the likes of McDonald's and Burger King, is now a major arm of the global economy. Franchise Direct, for instance, now operates franchise opportunities websites in nine different countries. Franchise Direct's Top 100 rankings for 2012 and its accompanying report, list the world's leading franchise concepts and explain why franchising is flourishing in America and beyond.
