The Fraser Institute: Alberta Schools Recognized for Academic Performance and Improvement at Annual Weston Awards for Excellence

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Nov. 14, 2007) - Fifty-one schools from across Alberta were recognized as being among the best in the province at the annual Garfield Weston Awards for Excellence in Education dinner in Calgary Tuesday.

Awards were presented in two categories, each reflecting different aspects of academic success. Improvement in Academics - Elementary and Improvement in Academics - High School recognize schools that have experienced the fastest, most consistent improvement in their academic ratings over the past five years. Academic Achievement in Excess of Expectations challenges the notion that only schools in rich neighborhoods do well. This award recognizes schools that ensure their students succeed regardless of their socioeconomic background.

The awards are based on an analysis of the historical data of each school included in independent research organization The Fraser Institute's annual Report Card on Alberta's Elementary Schools and Report Card on Alberta's High Schools. Out of 276 high schools and 705 elementary schools in Alberta, only the top performers in each category were invited to participate in the awards.

"The teachers, support staff, and administrators from these schools are pathfinders and have shown us what is possible," said Peter Cowley, director of school performance studies at The Fraser Institute. "We are delighted to honour their hard work and achievement. Not only does celebrating the accomplishments of these educators enable them to share their success with others, it also serves to inspire those seeking such success."

Almadina Language Charter Academy - Mountain View Elementary Campus of Calgary won the award for Improvement in Academics -Elementary and a $3,000 prize. Runners-up were Rundle School of Edmonton and Brightview School of Edmonton. Both received a $1,000 prize.

Glendon School of Glendon, a village in Northern Alberta, won the award for Improvement in Academics - High School and a $3,000 prize. Runners-up were Cochrane High School of Cochrane, 22 kilometres west of Calgary and H.J. Cody School of Sylvan Lake, 25 kilometres west of Red Deer. Both winners received a $1,000 prize.

For the first time ever in the Academic Achievement in Excess of Expectations category, two winners were selected; one for elementary and another for high schools.

Immanuel Christian Elementary School won the award for Academic Achievement in Excess of Expectations-Elementary and Vauxhall Junior Senior High School of Vauxhall, 114 kilometres west of Medicine Hat, won the award for Academic Achievement in Excess of Expectations - High School. Each school received a $3,000 prize.

Runners-up were Senator Gershaw School of Bow Island, 320 kilometres south of Calgary, and Victoria School of Performing and Visual Arts in Edmonton. Both schools received $1,000.

"Teachers and support staff at these schools are finding effective and innovative ways to rapidly and consistently improve school and student performance. What more can we ask of our schools than that they strive to improve?" Cowley said.
