The Fraser Institute: BC Schools Recognized for Academic Performance and Improvement at Annual Weston Awards for Excellence

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Nov. 9, 2007) - Fifty-three schools from across British Columbia were recognized as being among the best in the province at the annual Garfield Weston Awards for Excellence in Education dinner in Vancouver Thursday.

Awards were presented in two categories, each reflecting different aspects of academic success. Improvement in Academics - Elementary and Improvement in Academics - Secondary recognize schools that have experienced the fastest, most consistent improvement in their academic ratings over the past five years. Academic Achievement in Excess of Expectations challenges the notion that only schools in rich neighborhoods do well. This award recognizes schools that ensure their students succeed regardless of their socioeconomic background.

The awards are based on an analysis of the historical data of each school included in independent research organization The Fraser Institute's annual Report Card on BC's Elementary Schools and Report Card on BC's Secondary Schools. Out of 291 secondary schools and 984 elementary schools in BC, only the top performers in each category were invited to participate in the awards.

"The teachers, support staff, and administrators from these schools are pathfinders and have shown us what is possible," said Peter Cowley, director of school performance studies at The Fraser Institute. "We are delighted to honour their hard work and achievement. Not only does celebrating the accomplishments of these educators enable them to share their success with others, it also serves to inspire those seeking such success."

St. Helen's Elementary School of Burnaby won the award for Improvement in Academics-Elementary and a $3,000 prize. Runners-up were Rosedale Elementary School of Rosedale, a community located a short distance east of Chilliwack, and BC Muslim Elementary School of Richmond. Both received a $1,000 prize.

Lakes District Secondary School of Burns Lake, a community about 240 kilometres west of Prince George, won the award for Improvement in Academics - Secondary and received a $3,000 prize. Runners-up were West Point Grey Academy of Vancouver and Princess Margaret Secondary of Surrey. Both received a $1,000 prize.

For the first time ever in the Academic Achievement in Excess of Expectations category, two winners were selected; one for elementary and another for secondary.

Four Lower Mainland Schools took the top spots in this category; Corpus Christi Elementary School of Vancouver won the award for Academic Achievement in Excess of Expectations-Elementary and St. Patrick Regional Secondary of Vancouver won the award for Academic Achievement in Excess of Expectations -Secondary. Each school received a $3,000 prize.

Runners-up were St. Paul Elementary School of Richmond and Princess Margaret Secondary of Surrey. Both schools received $1,000.

"Teachers and support staff at these schools are finding effective and innovative ways to rapidly and consistently improve school and student performance. What more can we ask of our schools than that they strive to improve?" Cowley said.
