The Fraser Institute: Calgary Winning Battle of Alberta When It Comes to Highest Ranked Elementary Schools

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Feb. 24, 2008) - Thirteen of Alberta's 24 highest-ranked schools are located in Calgary, according to the Report Card on Alberta's Elementary Schools: 2008 Edition, released today by independent research organization The Fraser Institute.

The Report Card on Alberta's Elementary Schools: 2008 Edition rates 714 public, private, separate and charter elementary schools from across Alberta based on seven key indicators derived from province-wide tests of language arts and mathematics skills administered by Alberta Education.

Edmonton trailed Calgary with seven of the highest-ranked schools, followed by Okotoks, Strathmore, Burdette and Sherwood Park with one school in each community.

"The prevalence of top-ranked schools in Calgary compared to the rest of the province may be the result of the abundance of private schools in the city," said Peter Cowley, the Institute's Director of School Performance Studies and co-author of the report card.

"These schools not only strive to do well themselves, they also push public schools to improve so they won't lose students."

This annual report card compiles data from these indicators into easily read charts that allow anyone to analyze and compare the performance of individual schools. In addition to the average test results for each school, the report cards include the percentage of tests written by students who failed to meet provincial education ministry expectations, and details on whether the school's performance is improving or declining over time. Contextual indicators including the number of ESL, special needs, and French immersion students at each school and the average education level of the parents of the school's students, provide some context within which to analyze each school's results.

"The report card is much more than a snapshot in time. It tracks ongoing trends over a number of years that show how the school is doing in academics as well as containing information on the student population. This is information parents can't get anywhere else," Cowley said.

"Parents and educators can use the report card to compare their school to others in the community and around the province. By doing so, they will be able to identify areas of school performance that can be improved."
