The Fraser Institute: Media Advisory; Annual Awards for Excellence Honour Quebec's Top-Performing Secondary Schools

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - April 21, 2009) - Educators from Quebec's top-performing secondary schools will be recognized at the second annual Garfield Weston Awards for Excellence in Education, Wednesday, April 22, at the Sofitel Hotel in Montreal. About 85 educators from across the province will attend the reception and awards dinner.

Schools in Barraute, Chandler, Degelis, Forestville, Grenville-sur-la-Rouge, Montreal, Notre-Dame-du-Nord, Paspebiac, Richmond, Rimouski, Riviere-du-Loup, Rosemere, Saint-Marc-des-Carrieres, Sainte-Adele, Shawinigan, Terrebonne, and Westmount will be recognized for excellence. These annual awards honour teachers, principals, support staff, and volunteers from the top-performing secondary schools in Quebec. The awards are based on an analysis of the Ministry of Education's student results data for each school included in the Fraser Institute's annual Report Card on Quebec's Secondary Schools.

During dinner, the winner will be announced in each category-Improvement in Academics, Determination in Academic Achievement, and Overall Academic Achievement-and presented with a $3,000 award. The two runners-up in each category receive a $1,000 award. The remaining schools receive School of Distinction recognition.
