The Fraser Institute: Top One Per Cent of Elementary Schools Recognized at Annual Awards for Excellence in Education

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - March 20, 2008) - Seventy-nine elementary schools from across Ontario were recognized as being among the top one per cent in three categories of academic achievement at the annual Garfield Weston Awards for Excellence in Education dinner in Toronto Wednesday.

The widely talked-about awards are based on an analysis of the historical data of each school included in the Fraser Institute's annual Report Card on Ontario's Elementary Schools. Out of 2,786 English and French, public and separate elementary schools from across Ontario, only the top one per cent (30 schools) in each category are invited to participate in the awards.

Awards were presented in three categories, each reflecting different aspects of academic success. Improvement in Academics recognizes schools that have experienced the fastest, most consistent improvement in their academic performance over the past five years. Academic Achievement in Excess of Expectations recognizes schools that ensure that their students succeed regardless of the hurdles they may face. This award challenges the notion that only schools in rich neighbourhoods do well academically. The award for Overall Academic Achievement recognizes schools whose students have achieved remarkable, ongoing academic success over the last five years.

"The teachers and administrators from these schools are pathfinders and have shown us what is possible. We are delighted to honour their hard work and achievement," said Peter Cowley, director of school performance studies at The Fraser Institute, an independent research organization. "Celebrating the accomplishments of these educators enables them to share their successes with others and inspire those seeking such success."

Howard Jordan Public School of Port Hope, a community about 100 kilometres east of Toronto, won the award for Academic Achievement in Excess of Expectations for the second year in a row along with a $3,000 prize. Runners-up were Ecole elementaire catholique Saint-Michel of Leamington and Ossington/Old Orchard Junior Public School of Toronto, both were also runners-up at last year's awards. Both schools received $1,000 prize.

St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School of Toronto won the award for Improvement in Academics along with a $3,000 prize. Runners up were St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Elementary School of Waterdown, a community in Hamilton, and Notre Dame Catholic School of Orillia, a city about 135 kilometres north of Toronto. Both schools received a $1,000 prize.

Also continuing its winning streak for the third year in a row is Seneca Hill Public School of Toronto. The school won the Overall Academic Achievement Award along with a $3,000 prize. Runners-up were Denlow Public School of Toronto, also a finalist in this category at last year's awards, and St. Justin Martyr Catholic School of Unionville, a suburban community in Markham, a school that received School of Distinction recognition at last year's awards. Both schools received a $1,000 prize.

The remaining school teams-all among the top one percent in their categories-received School of Distinction recognition.

"Teachers and support staff at these schools are finding effective and innovative ways to rapidly and consistently improve school and student performance. This should be cause for a great deal of pride and celebration," said Cowley.
